ZyDoc Accepted into Stony Brook University Incubator Program to Develop Health Information Knowledge Management Technologies

ISLANDIA, NY (PRWEB) NOVEMBER 9, 2017 – ZyDoc, a New York-based medical informatics company, is pleased to announce its acceptance into the Stony Brook Incubator Program at Stony Brook University. The Incubator Program, which helps new technologically innovative companies grow by providing them with a variety of support resources and services, has four locations totaling more than 100,000sf. The ZyDoc R&D team will move into the the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) this month.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to advance ZyDoc’s research and development in cloud-based, AI-driven medical knowledge management,” states James M. Maisel, MD, ZyDoc Chairman. “ZyDoc has multiple disruptive, enabling technologies in development now. We have a small, but immensely talented and dedicated in-house team of developers, programmers, and project managers. Through the Incubator Program, we will gain invaluable support in technology development, as well as help in focusing our commercialization strategies.”

Dr. Ann-Marie Scheidt, Chair of the Incubator Program’s tenant selection and review committee, welcomed ZyDoc to the incubator program: “We are delighted that you have chosen the incubator based in CEWIT for your R&D efforts to address the formidable challenges of new natural language processing software and related medical data applications. Stony Brook’s research talent and experience in these areas promises exciting and mutually rewarding collaborations at the leading edge of knowledge.”

As a healthcare information technology innovator, ZyDoc is well-aligned with the Stony Brook Incubator mission. Selection criteria for acceptance into the program include “consistency of the ventures identified or planned industry or business sector with [its] mission of supporting the future leaders of Long Island’s high technology economy… [and] demonstration of capacity to achieve the venture’s business goals including expertise in chosen technology field(s), market assessment, management team, adequacy of financial support…”

ZyDoc’s history of medical informatics innovation is representative of technology company growth trajectories, as it has pivoted from achieving success to seizing new opportunities. In 1993, ZyDoc developed one of the first EMRs, which was subsequently sold to the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1999, ZyDoc’s speech recognition medical language models were bundled with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical. In 2003, ZyDoc shifted focus to web-based transcription services that became the industry standard. ZyDoc’s mission is to increase the efficiency of physicians to improve patient care and outcomes, lower malpractice risk, and ensure appropriate reimbursement through the use of software technologies and services, including its award-winning, HIPAA-secure, cloud-based e-transcription infrastructure and medical informatics technologies, and its MediSapien web-based knowledge management platform that uses disruptive natural language processing (NLP) and AI technologies.

Today, ZyDoc provides business-to-business services for healthcare entities regarding medical knowledge management and data capture, including: transcription infrastructure and services, EHR data insertion, clinical Natural Language Processing, conversion of unstructured clinical text into structured clinical concepts and terminologies, and processing medical data for reporting, analytics and research. CEWIT’s and Stony Brook’s expertise and resources in the underlying technologies will accelerate the company’s growth in developing these cost-saving and qualitative new capabilities for healthcare providers.

About the Stony Brook Incubator Program

The Stony Brook Incubator Program has four facilities aggregating to 106,000sf, plus a “virtual” Clean Energy Business Incubator Program funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The oldest and largest facility, the Long Island High Technology Incubator, offers the only wet lab space in very small footprints affordable by startups and most of its tenants are developing diagnostics, therapeutics and medical devices. CEWIT hosts IT companies, including medical IT; its R&D Park neighbor, the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AEC) accommodates energy companies, and a 24,000sf facility in Calverton, near Brookhaven National Laboratory, is a multi-technology operation with food processing lines serving the East End agricultural community. The most recent analysis of tenant accomplishments found that 44 of 80 program graduates are still in business, a success rate that exceeds the typical 10% success rate by 5.5X. The Incubator Program has received New York State-certified Incubator and Innovation Hot Spot awards.

About CEWIT

To best capitalize on the IT revolution, spur economic growth, advance scientific research and develop the technologies of tomorrow, the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) opened in 2009 as the 100,000sf initial anchor in Stony Brook University’s Research and Development Park. The Center is a next generation research and educational facility whose mission is three-fold: become recognized as a world leader in interdisciplinary research in the emerging, critical technologies of the information age, address the skilled technology worker shortage, and foster new enterprise development. CEWIT’s integrated suite of Business Development and Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) functions fit the needs of diverse incubator companies. The staff members’ combined range of recognized scientific, corporate, consulting, and entrepreneurship/startup venture experience provides a wide range of both scientific vetting and business mentoring to aid in the creation of new businesses and help entrepreneurs to sort out their operating business model and funding options, their time horizons and viability, and how they can gain leverage by application of SBU’s intellectual and material assets.
